What to look out for when reducing sugar
Through all my cooking and recipes I like to find flavoursome and healthy ways to get nutrition into my family while reducing our refined sugar intake. Here are some of my top tips of creating dishes that are still tasty but low in sugar, but also, how to spot the hidden sugar in foods.
There are many offenders when it comes to spiking food with sugar, watch out for juice drinks, breakfast cereals, snacks, condiments and can you even believe it, fruit!
Be clever and swap sugar! To get that sugar or sweet hit you can always use a non-processed healthier alternative such as maple syrup or berries.
Sometimes when you're really craving sugar, it's because your blood sugar levels are fluctuating and you simply just need some more energy so have some complex carbohydrates like whole grains to give you the fuel you need and they also help regulate your blood sugar levels.
Read labels before you buy - I wonder how many of your favourite foods contain hidden sugars? Make sure you scan the ingredients and if sugar appears high on the list it's probably best kept on the shelf.
Natural sugar, like the kind found in fresh fruit has naturally occurring sugars, but also has vital vitamins, minerals and fibre. Be wary of certain fruit but certainly don't cut it all from your diet!
